Bisserov Sisters

Lyubimka, Mitra, and Neda have been ambassadors for Bulgarian folk music for more than 25 years. They started as members of Philip Koutev's acclaimed ensemble, Mystere des voix Bulgares, and then began to tour in their own right becoming the first Bulgarian singers to establish a following as far afield as China, Cuba, and the UK. Their unique polyphonic-style of singing comes from the Pirin Mountains south of the capital Sofia. The Bisserov Sisters have toured the UK ten times performing in the traditional dress of their home-town and accompanied by acoustic instruments including the Tambura, and Tarambuka. Their songs are about love, humour, weddings and the seasons of the year. Audiences are welcome to participate with the Sisters. Kate Bush and Hank Wangford are among the diverse UK-based musicians who love their music.

Janis Ian

Rolling Stone once stated, "Before there was Jewel, there was Janis Ian." It is an apt portrayal of an artist known for her ethereal vocals, poetic wordplay, literate phrasing and sublime melodies. Through more than three decades, Ian has managed to keep folk music fresh and inspiring, always winning praise for her remarkable songwriting and tender voice.

Best known for At Seventeen, her classic song of teenage angst, Janis has always tackled uncomfortable subjects. Her 1966 debut hit single Society's Child dealt with the then taboo topic of interracial love, while her 1993 album Breaking Silence tackled incest.
Her trio of masterpiece albums: Stars, Between the Lines and Aftertones produced the hit song Jesse (which Roberta Flack made a pop standard) and the single At Seventeen which sold more than a million copies was nominated for an unprecedented 5 Grammy awards, (winning 2) propelled Ian to superstardom.

Atmospheric and ballsy, yet graceful and melodic, the sixties phenomenon turned '70s comeback queen is now well into her third resurgence, and makes a welcome return to the live scene.

The release of her 18th studio album, Billie's Bones, is the latest achievement in Ian's remarkable career. Billie's Bones beautifully showcases Ian's superb songwriting and sultry vocals.

Muzsikas Ensemble
with special guests Marta Sebestyen - vocal
Zoltan Farkas and Ildiko Toth - dance

Muzsikas are one of the most famous Hungarian folk ensembles. Together with their star soloist Marta Sebestyen, they have brought traditional Hungarian folk music to a wide audience throughout the world.

Formed in the 70's when the young urban "folk music new wave" began to break through in Hungary, they are steeped in the traditions of folk song, music, dance and the spontaneous pieces that so fascinated Bartok.

Their music appears in the film Music Box and their famous song 'Szerelem szerelem' (Love love) performed by Marta can be heard in the film The English Patient.

Good Hungarian folk -- and Muzsikas play it better than anyone -- is an aural delight, the sawing fiddles and complex time signatures are intensely moving and raucously beautiful.

"The leader of the group, Daniel Hamar, plays thumping dance patterns on double bass, and delivers dead-pan commentaries on the music in English . . . " New York Times

"There were plaintive songs with rhapsodic modal melodies, driving dances that demolished any sense of regular meter, and some fancy fiddle playing over droning accompaniments . . . " New York Times

"As Hungary's leading folk ensemble, it's only fitting that Muzsikas should investigate the folk connections of Hungary's greatest composers, Bela Bartok . . . these are great performances of well chosen music, that resonate very deeply." Gramophone Magazine

Tickets: £15.00 Concessions £13.00

Kings of Convenience
+ Call & Response

On hearing The Kings of Convenience for the first time you might mistake them for Nick Drake, Belle & Sebastian, or even Burt Bacharach. They are in fact a duo from Norway, singer/guitarist Erik Glambek Bøe and guitarist Erlend Øye. They charmed their way into listeners' hearts with their lovely debut CD Quiet Is The New Loud with its honest storytelling, wide-eyed lyricism and acoustic fearlessness in the face of fashion. Their new CD Riot on An Empty Street has garnered similar plaudits for its warm melodies and exquisitely detailed ruminations. The lush, sombre love songs performed in hushed tones display a maturity and disregard of things mainstream rarely seen in young bands, with the honesty of the feelings and lyrics only helping to enrich each song.

Live, "they live or die by their melodies: every note is hauntingly perfect" NME.

Tickets: £15.00 plus £1.50 booking fee

Hailed as one of the country's finest young song writers in the jazz genre, her work has been performed and recorded by other artists all over the UK and has even reached as far as Nashville USA. Her voice, voted the sexiest voice in jazz by Jazz UK readers, is second to none and has an immense range allowing Clare to sing the most delicate ballads along with more rousing Blues based songs. As her debut performance on Michael Parkinson's TV Show proved, Clare is a truly unique and exciting singer. Her performances also give an insight into her off stage character, they are light-hearted, entertaining, witty and real.
